A new manga adaptation of the first TV series called Macross: The First has been released in Japan during 2009. It is a comic format alternate telling of the events in The Super Dimension Fortress Macross (with modern character and mecha designs) that is being serialized in the Sh?nen Ace manga magazine. There are many similarities in the makeup and appearance of the main cast to the cast of Doraemon, which was also created by Fujio, though the content of the story is completely different.<br><br>The main character is a scientific genius boy named Kiteretsu, who has built a companion robot named Korosuke. He frequently travels in time with his friends and Korosuke in the time machine he built. Miyoko is a girl in his neighborhood who is basically his girlfriend. Tongari is his rival, who happen to share some similar traits of Honekawa Suneo. Buta Gorilla (Kumada Kaoru) is a typical neighborhood bully, who also share similar traits of Gian (Takeshi Goda) except that he often antagonizes Korosuke. (though they are in grade school).

The main character (the blonde ponytailed guy - yeah, guy) is Aramiya Satoshi, who main ability is shapeshifting into any animal ...though at a few points he has plants growing out of him, so my guess is he can shapeshift into any living thing (including an elephant and a lion) I'm not sure if he was naturally born that way or if he was a biological experiment. Anyway, he's a pretty easygoing guy who just wants to be left alone to enjoy his solitary life in the middle of a junkyard, but apparently some army or another is always after him because of his ability, though he is able to fight off entire tank battalions before breakfast. In 2071, north pole ice have melted and the land has been submerged. Humanity survived but it's divided into two species: the true humans, those who live in underwater cities, and the Dugons, those who chose to undergo genetic modification to live in the sea. Both species go to war to survive as long as the Dugons consider the humans good to eat. To defend against the Dugons, the city of Mari Ramelle builds a new kind of weapon, the mermaid robot, Salacia. Because of the small size of the the pilot cabin, the robot is piloted by a girl and a boy, both 13 years old: Marin Yuuki and Ushio Mizushiro. The fight for survival is hard, and during the manga, the city builds more mermaid robots.

The Nightmare of Fabrication is a beautifully drawn full-colour manga from Yoshitoshi ABe. The 18 page short story can be found in the Lain Omnipresence in Wired artbook. It's a bonus story which apparently isn't related with neither the anime nor the PS game. It shows characters who were included in the PS game but not in the TV series (like the psychiatrist), but also determinant characters from the anime who didn't appear in the videogame (like Deus).
